Yahweh disciplines his people either to chastise them for former sins or to prepare them for the future.

1.    Read the following passages on discipline and divide them into two categories: 1) The discipline of man; 2) the discipline of God. Prov. 1:2f, 7f; 3:11; 4:1, 13; 5:12, 23; 6:23; 7:22; 8:10, 33; 10:17; 12:1; 13:1, 18, 24; 15:5, 10, 32f; 16:22; 19:20, 27; 22:15; 23:12f, 23; 24:32

2.    When musar is applied by humans to humans, who is mainly the one applying it?  Does this have relationship to how God is treating us when he disciplines us?

3.  Read the Elihu section of Job (32-37).  Some suggest that Elihu is saying that God is preparing Job for the future by disciplining him in the present.  Can you find any evidence for this in his speeches
