Lesson 3

THE FOUR GOSPELS
(Part 2)

Pages 453-484

1.  A young person says to you, “I don’t understand John 8:12-14.”  Do your best to explain briefly and clearly.

2.  Explain Jesus’ statement, “Ye shall seek me and die in your sins.”  p. 455

3.  Identify at least one significant reason why the Pharisees, and many Jews, had difficulty in understanding Jesus’ teachings.  Cite a scripture, or a comment by McGarvey, to support your answer.

4.  See Jesus’ teachings in John 8: 31-36. (pp. 456-457)  What puts a person in bondage?  What sets a person free?

5.  Whom do the Jews claim as their father?  On what basis does Jesus reject their claim?  (Question 7. takes this discussion a step further.)

6.  In verse 41, p. 458, Jesus says to the Pharisees, “Ye do the works of your father.”  Who is the father Jesus refers to?  What are some of the works of this father?

7.  In verse 68, p. 461, Jesus says, “Before Abraham was, I am.”  He didn’t say “I was.”     How does McGarvey explain the use of “am” instead of “was”?

8.  Explain the question that Jesus’ disciples asked about the man born blind—verse 2,    p. 462.  How did Jesus answer their question?

9.  In verse 7, p. 469, Jesus says, “I am the door of the sheep.”  What does he mean? What are some of McGarvey’s most helpful comments on this figurative language?

10.  Jesus sent seventy disciples on a mission, p. 472ff.  What were they not to take with them?  Why not?    What are some of the important instructions they were given?  (How were they to proceed with their work?)

11.  What point was Jesus making in telling the parable of the Good Samaritan?

12.  Mary and Martha are significantly different women.  Describe the differences.  Which one does Jesus commend most highly—and why?

13.  The disciples said, “Lord, teach us to pray.”  What does Jesus teach them about prayer in Luke 11: 5-13? 14.  How does Jesus defend his practice of healing on the Sabbath?  pp. 482, 483.
