1. Jesus’ disciples (apostles) failed in an attempt to heal the demoniac boy. How does McGarvey explain their failure?
2. Consider Jesus’ teaching in Matt. 17:20 (p. 426). Most Bible students believe that Jesus is using hyperbole in this teaching. Define “hyperbole” and explain Jesus’ meaning. If you believe he is speaking literally, justify your view.
3. How are we to understand the paradox on p. 427? Jesus said, “Let these words sink into your ears. . . . .” The text then says, “But they understood not this saying . . . .” Explain.
4. Pp. 430, 431. What constitutes greatness in the kingdom of heaven? Does Jesus’ teaching on this topic apply to the church in the 21st century? Explain.
5. Put in writing your understanding of verse 40, p. 431ff. Does this teaching raise questions in your mind? For instance?

10. Identify and explain the differences of opinion concerning Jesus at the feast in Jerusalem. pp. 443-450
11. Quote the appropriate Old Testament scripture, which, under Mosaic Law, spells out the penalty for adultery.
12. Why did the scribes and Pharisees accuse the adulteress before Jesus? p. 451. Why didn’t they simply deal with her according to the Law?
13. Explain Jesus’ response to the accusation of the adulteress. Did he set aside the Law of Moses?
14. Did Jesus forgive this woman? Explain your view.
