1. What is the basic principle taught by Jesus in Matt. 6:1-5? One   carefully worded sentence should do the job.

2.In Matt. 6:7, Jesus teaches against “vain repetition”? What is “vain   repetition” and what’s wrong with it? Check two or three modern   translations of this verse.

3. McGarvey lays out the content/significance of the “Lord’s Prayer.”   He says that “it   is divided into two sections, and each section is subdivided in three   heads.” In your   own words, as much as possible, identify these two sections and the   subdivisions  of each.

4. Explain as clearly as you can the point (or points) that Jesus is   teaching in   Matt. 6:19-21.

5. Prepare a brief devotional talk (write it down) on Jesus’ teaching   found in Matt. 6:  25-34. The job is to make this teaching understandable and   relevant for your   contemporaries. (about 150 words)

6. What are two common meanings for the verb “judge”?

7. Under what conditions must we judge one another? Are there   matters on which  we must refrain from judging others? Explain.

8. What two “ways” does Jesus describe in the Sermon on the   Mount? Explain them.

9. What lessons do we learn from Jesus’ account of the two builders?   (pages 269ff)

10. The story of the healing of the centurion’s servant is quite a special   experience in   Jesus’ ministry. What are some of the ways in which it is special?   (Matt. 8:5-13)
