1. Compare what Matthew and Luke say about the setting of the Sermon on the Mount. How do the accounts differ and how can the differences be accounted for? What position does McGarvey hold?2. Define the word “beatitude.” Define “blessed.” (Give two or three synonyms.)

9. Jesus quotes the Old Testament commandment, “Thou shalt not commit adultery,” and then gives it a stricter definition. What is this stricter definition and how are we to understand it?
10. In Matt. 5: 29 and 30, Jesus instructs his disciples to pluck out the right eye if it causes them to stumble, and to cut off the right hand if it causes them to stumble. Is a Christian expected to take this teaching literally? How is this teaching to be understood? Consider McGarvey’s thoughts.
11. Jesus says (Matt. 5:34), “Swear not at all . . . .” Is this an absolute command? Or are there some reasonable exceptions? Support your view. (Go beyond your private opinion.)
