A sphinx was the portrait head of a king attached to the body of a lion. This famous sphinx was
a portrait of King Khafre (Fig. 52 and § 94), before whose pyramid it lies as a sentinel guarding 
the mighty cemetery of Gizeh. The body is 187 feet long, and the head is 66 feet high
