Found in his valley-temple (Fig. 39). It is carved in excessively hard stone, called diorite. The falcon with protecting wings outstretched is a symbol of the great god Horus (twenty-ninth century B.C.)

It represents King Pepi I (nearly 2600 B. C.). It was hammered into shape over a wooden form. The metal is encrusted with rust, but owing to the eyes, of inlaid rock crystal, the portrait is very lifelike (cf. Fig. 220)
