SKETCH MAP OP NINEVEH
Notice the changes in the course of the Tigris, which formerly flowed
along the west wall of the city. This change has been caused by the Khoser
River, which has carried down soil and formed a plain between the wall
of the city and the Tigris. In Fig. 203
we have a view from a housetop in Mosul, across the river from Nineveh,
showing us this plain, with the mound of Kuyunjik just behind it. This
mound covers the palaces of Sennacherib and Assurbanipal. A destructive
overflow of the Khoser River, which flooded the city and broke down a section
of the eastern wall, was one of the chief causes of the fall of Nineveh |
