Damascus is still the largest city of Syria, having probably three hundred thousand inhabitants. When it became the most powerful Aramean city-kingdom (§ 203) it must have been surrounded by a wall like that of Samal (Fig. 97), with a splendid royal castle. The ruins of all these ancient Aramean buildings must now lie under those of the modern city, and hence ancient Damascus will never be excavated.
